Wintering by Katherine May | Part 6 | Storytime with Katie

Content Warning: this book is intended for adults and may include adult content Introduction: My dad gifted me this book years ago. Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times. I loved the title immediately and looked forward to diving in. I read a few pages and then put it away so it could hibernate until the mood struck. Fast forward a few years and I was re-introduced to the author, Katherine May, as a late-diagnosed autistic woman who speaks and writes about neurodivergence in such a compassionate and captivating way that my own neurodivergent brain adores. I listened to this podcast episode (https://shorturl.at/gilmL) between her and Glennon Doyle and knew I wanted to read more of her work. Here we are in December 2023, trying again. Most books take several tries for me and this one is definitely worth it. It's so seasonally appropriate right now, though I have to say, I think this book fits any season since it's about emotional wintering just as much as seasonal wintering. About Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times: "Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May's story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat, joy in the hushed beauty of winter, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical, not linear. A secular mystic, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season." About the Author: "Katherine May is the New York Times bestselling author of Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times. A writer of both fiction and nonfiction, May has had journalism and essays appear in a range of publications including The New York Times, The Times (London), Good Housekeeping, and Cosmopolitan. She lives by the sea in Whitstable, England and is an avid lover of the outdoors." (Both excerpts above are copied from Penguin Random House: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/bo...) This read-aloud is part of a series I’ve created called Storytime with Katie. Reading books all the way through can be a challenge for me. One day I decided to record myself reading as a way to build accountability and actually read a book all the way through. Over the years it has evolved into a pleasureful practice where I share books I have read before as well as books that I have wanted to read for a long time. Giving myself permission to read messily is a must so if you can’t stand throat-clearing, random comments, or mistakes this video probably isn’t for you. Thanks for being here!
