Marcel Reid’s talk rethinks whistleblowing in the context of what it means to her, and what it can and should mean to all working for and with those at the margins of society. Asking the difficult questions that the powerful don’t want asked (or answered) is, she suggests, an extension of the questions those living on the margins often ask, only to be met by silence. Her experience leads her to offer a different model for anti-poverty organizations. Switch focus from working for to working with the poor and disenfranchised, and when outreach is made, provide information about HOW the organization works, as well as what it aims to do. Invite questions and whistleblowing, because its purpose is to change the way the world works. Marcel Reid has had a major impact over the last decade in grassroots community organizing, the whistleblowing community, and a national media foundation. Her efforts have resulted in major policy changes. Marcel has testified in the United States Senate on behalf of Major Legislation and has been included in several Congressional Oversight Committee Reports As National Director, Chair of DC ACORN and one of a three-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to reorganize ACORN after the discovery of a embezzlement, Marcel faced the difficulties in reporting corruption. This was her first exposure in fighting entrenched corruption. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
