Dr. Shanna Swan: Dissecting the Fertility Crisis

If you're reading this... thank you for being part of our first podcast episode! Thank's for your support as we try to get this thing rolling. Hitting that like button lets us know we're doing something right and really helps spread this important message. My guest today is Dr. Shanna Swan, a distinguished PhD environmental and reproductive epidemiologist. Dr. Swan is a Professor of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, and adjunct faculty at UCSF. She is world renowned for her groundbreaking research on the impact of environmental exposures on human reproductive health, which is of great interest to me because hormones are richly involved in that process. Her work has focused on the effects of chemicals such as phthalates and Bisphenol A (BPA) on men's and women's reproductive health, as well as on the neurodevelopment of children. She is probably best known for a co-authored paper on the male infertility crisis, which became one of the most referenced scientific papers of 2017. She is also the author of the 2021 book Count Down, "How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race." I've read this book twice. Not only is it my go-to book for it's data and studies and facts, it's a visionary treatise on the subject. It's not just a data dump of bad news. It will get you thinking about the serious implications of this data, yes, but also provides solutions you can implement right now, today. Honestly, I don't know of too many scientists with such pressing information for our day. In this podcast we look at genital/reproductive tract development and what occurs when that process is interrupted. We review the factors that contribute to semen quality and fertility in general. Dr Swan also talks about worldwide fertility rates dropping by 50% since 1960 and some factors that may be contributing. This is only a taste of topics discussed in this podcast episode.
