Seed Treatment Modes of Action: Introduction to Fungicides

Pioneer Field Agronomist Matt Montgomery discusses the different seed treatment modes of action in the first part of this unique mini-series. It is important for growers to understand how modes of action impact plants, weeds, insects and diseases alike. Fungicides prevent, kill, mitigate or inhibit the growth of fungi on plants. Five major fungicide seed treatment modes of action include: Strobilurin, Triazole, Succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI), RNA polymerase inhibitor, and MAP kinase inhibitor. Fungicides may work by damaging the cell membrane of the fungus, inhibiting an important process that the fungi, or targeting a single or multiple processes in the fungus. Incorporating different or multiple modes of action can prevent fungicide resistance.
