Conrail Bridge One

"Bridge One" is the double track former NYC vertical lift bridge over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, OH. These scenes were captured in November 1988. As a Conrail employee, I introduced myself to the operator and he was gracious enough to allow me to video inside the control room, and at his suggestion I took a ride on the lift span when it opened for the American Republic, which was working the Lorain Pellet Shuttle at the time. Two other vessels of note on the video, the Irvin L Clymer of the USS Bradley fleet, and the Henry Ford II of the Ford fleet, both in their final seasons of operation. The Henry Ford II was equipped with a distinctive British design Doxford diesel engine whose distinctive sound can be heard as it heads under the bridge.
