Hiking the 'Around the Mountain Track'. Tongariro National Park, New Zealand.

A 77 km hike over tough terrain with a weather forecast of "unstable" was never going to be easy. But if it was, then everybody would be going it. This trail has five huts, so it can be hiked over 6 days with around 12 kilometers of walking each day. We opted for the four day version with two days of around 12 km and two days over of over 20 km. The track is spectacular with a wide variety of underfoot conditions, from gravel path and boardwalks to mud and rocks - there are millions of rocks! It's steep and very technical in places, but in others it's open a quite fast walking.
