This piece is a tribute to the beautiful phenomenon of fireflies. I am a former professional dancer who is a practising naturopath, medical nutritionist, clinical hypnotherapist and mental health professional. I am so passionate about health that I work out and go to the dance studio 10 to 14 hours each week. It’s my ‘me’ time away from my work. As I teach people if you don’t have ‘me’ time you don’t have any ‘me’. FIREFLIES Fireflies are one of the great wonders of the world. They are bugs, not flies. You find them in woodlands and shallow forests throughout the world, in warm and temperate places. They particularly like moist environments, even in dry forests in the rainy session. There are an estimated 2,400 recorded identified species. They are all winged beetles and can fly. So, they have two wings and the outside shell-type wings are called the Electra that also beat when they are flying. At night during mating season, they shine by bioluminescence in the dark t. It’s their way of advertising they are ready to mate. They can even be seen with hundreds of them flashing their light in co-ordination with each other. A study at the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture found a decline in numbers due to modern farming practices. It was noted that this was due to changing climate patterns, toxic farming and the use of pesticides and herbicides, artificial light at night, and deforestation. Fireflies are truly one of nature’s wonders to behold. Since they are a barometer for the health of our wild places, we really need to take care of our woodland and forests.
