The death of KATHERINE HOWARD and JANE BOLEYN, Viscountess Rochford took place at the Tower of London on 13 February 1542. In this six wives documentary from History Calling, we revisit this dark day in Tudor history to learn how Henry VIII’s fifth wife and youngest Queen met her end, alongside her former lady in waiting and Henry’s one-time sister-in-law, Jane. The execution of Katherine Howard, who was only in her late teens or very early 20s, was undoubtedly a Tudor tragedy and she may not even have been guilty of the adultery of which she was accused. Yet despite her youth, she met her end with remarkable composure, even practising with the block the night before her death. Jane Boleyn apparently had a breakdown as her fate neared, but she too managed to make what was considered a good end. Many myths have arisen over the centuries about what happened that day however. This video will unpick Katherine Howard’s final words (including the story that she said she died a queen, but would rather die the wife of Culpeper, one of the men she was accused of having an affair with). It will also look at Jane Boleyn’s scaffold speech and at the story that she confessed to lying about her husband George Boleyn’s incestuous relationship with his sister, Queen Anne Boleyn, back in 1536. In addition, it will look at Katherine Howard’s final days, to see how she acted during the run up to her death, as well as on the day itself, as England once again witnessed the execution of a Queen.
