Dysfunction of synapses and neuronal networks in Alzheimer's disease

Afia Ali, PhD, UCL School of Pharmacy, University College London, London, UK, discusses the role of synaptic and network dysfunction in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The brain of a patient with Alzheimer’s disease enters a hyperexcitable state when the excitatory-inhibitory balance among neurons is disrupted. This leads to faster progression of disease, as dysfunctional proteins are spread through the brain. Dr Ali discusses how reducing the hyperexcitability could help to slow progression of disease. This interview took place at the Alzheimer's Research UK Conference 2022 in Brighton, UK.
