Dinah is the perfect tune for starting out with improvisation. In this jazz violin lesson I use the simple chord sequence for this tune as a vehicle for demonstrating the first steps in jazz soloing. First you can do the G major scale, simply playing up and down the scale freely over the changing chords. Then try the G major pentatonic, and finally the G major blues scale. By not worrying about the requirements of each new chord as it comes, you are allowed to play freely and without fear or reservation. Because this is a simple diatonic chord sequence, all the notes of each scale will sound ok at any point in the tune. Of course I point out the limitations of this approach, and the importance of eventually learning properly about chords, phrasing and the use of licks, all of which will help to create a much more slick and sophisticated soloing style.
