The Tanum petroglyphs are a large collection of rock carvings on the western coast of Sweden. Based on whats depicted within the images, they have been dated to the Nordic Bronze Age to the early Iron Age starting almost 4,000 years ago. (approx. 1800-500 BC) Small circles, and boats of the (Hjortspring) style, make up the majority of the carvings. They also show other things, such as wagons, carts, chariots, people with weapons such as the axe, spear, bow, long forgotten rituals, musical instruments such as the Lur, a bronze horn with no finger holes commonly found in pairs, scenes of hunting and various animals such as bulls, horses, snakes, deer, birds, and a whale. The red paint was added to make them more visible to tourists, which has caused some criticism and debate amongst scholars as its unknown if they were originally painted. The Tanum petroglyphs became a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994 and are visited by thousands of people every year. I took most of these photos in 2001, the other images are credited at the end of the video.
