A Walk in the Past - Village Life in the English Countryside | RYEDALE FOLK MUSEUM, ENGLAND.

Step back in time with me on this beautiful sunny morning as we walk around the fascinating open air folk museum in Hutton-le-Hole in the North York Moors, England, and get a true sense of what village life was really like in rural Yorkshire in the distant past. If you enjoy this video please consider subscribing to the channel    / @walktheworldaway   On such a lovely September morning in the English countryside, this walk into the past was a real treat and I highly recommend a visit should the opportunity arise. Museum walks are not usually a consideration on this channel but with Ryedale being outdoors in such a beautiful location, I wanted to share the experience with all of you lovely people out there. Look out for the Hutton-le Hole village walk on the channel which was filmed on the same day. Ryedale Folk Museum is an open-air museum nestled within the beautiful North York Moors National Park in the picturesque village of Hutton-le-Hole. The museum tells the stories of local people from pre-history to the present day. About twenty of the museum's buildings have been saved from nearby villages and reconstructed at the museum. The museum covers an area of six acres which hosts the buildings, agricultural machinery, a model village, an orchard and even some farm animals. Included in the exhibits are a blacksmith's, a cobbler's, a grocery store, a chemist's, a saddler's, a tinsmith, an undertaker's, a witch's hovel, a shepherd's hut, a thatched Elizabethan Manor House, a Medieval crofter's cottage, a Victorian thatched cottage, washhouse and dairy and even an Iron-Age Roundhouse. The 1950’s shop and post-office came from moorland village Rosedale East, whilst the chemist came from Helmsley and was modernised in the 1960s Stang End Longhouse is a cruck-framed thatched building built in the 17th century in Danby on the northern edge of the North York Moors. It has been restored to show what life was like for a simple farming family. The house is divided into four sections; a dairy, a bedroom, a kitchen, and a dining area. The building was used as a setting for the BBC feature 'Death Comes to Pemberley'. Perhaps the most impressive historic building in the museum is the manor house Harome Hall - a cruck-framed building erected in the late 16th century in Harome village. It was relocated and rebuilt at the Ryedale Folk Museum in 1971. The scale of the structure is remarkable considering it uses simple construction techniques with no nails, and timbers had to be raised into place by hand. A silver spoon believed to have been made in 1510 was discovered in the thatched roof during the building's relocation to Ryedale. The Edwardian daylight photographic studio and darkroom represents the oldest surviving example of such a building in England. It was the workspace of William Hayes, and later of his son Raymond, and has a fascinating history. Incredibly, the lobby windows are made from 140 glass negatives that have been stripped of their emulsion – an amazing example of ingenuity with the available materials. First constructed in 1902, the studio was actually moved and recreated on two separate occasions! The first move came amid concerns about the air quality for the family in its location in Monkgate, York. In 1911, the family uprooted to the moorland village of Hutton-le-Hole and the studio came with them – in pieces by horse and cart. It was the archetypal escape to the country.
