Facebook ►   / kruzeconsulting   Twitter ►  / kruzeconsulting   Hey, it's Scott Orn at Kruze Consulting, and today we're talking about fraudulent or misleading California Statement of Information requests. And I don't know what's going on, but there's some real weirdness out there. We have a bunch of clients at Kruze who are sending us these very sketchy kind of official-looking requests to pay them anywhere, pay someone anywhere from 125 bucks to 250 bucks, and essentially posing as a Statement of Information filing for the state of California. These are fraudulent. Please be careful, please don't pay this. Especially if you pay it, you're going to get on like the easy mark list. But for those who don't know, in California, you have to file a Statement of Information every year, and it's not that hard. It doesn't take a ton of time but you do have to do it. And what you're doing is giving the state of California like your updated address, your updated officers, all that kind of stuff. And California needs that because they need to be able to send you like tax documents or reach you if there's something going on. And so of course, you want to believe the best of humanity, but sometimes direct marketers or mail people, mail fraud people latch onto these things and we have seen a huge uptick in these direct mailings. It will look fairly official. I actually, when I looked at it, I had kind of a hard time telling. It'll have a very generic name, like official processor or processing state of California and probably a little bit of a scary cover letter to kind of try to get your adrenaline up and trigger your fear reflexes. Just be careful. This is the great thing about working with a CPA who knows the state of California. Send it to your CPA. Whether you're working with Kruze or not, they will take a look and validate it. These filings are 99.9% of the time done electronically in the state of California's portal, very easy to navigate to, and that should kind of be your first tip off if you're getting this like super aggressive direct mail. The world doesn't really run on handling paperwork over direct mail. Yes, notifications, yes, status updates, things like that, but soliciting $250 over direct mail should trigger some of those warning bells in you. So again, reach out to your CPA. You can always just scan it. We have clients. I think we got three of these last week and that's why I'm recording this video. We had three clients do a quick scan, send it in to us. We looked at it, realized it was fraudulent, and then also, hey, it's kind of nice. We sent them their receipt for their Statement of Information that we filed on time in the regular rotation. So beware of these fraudulent tax forms that are coming to you with super generic official processing language and are designed to trigger your fear reflexes. Send it to your CPA.
