This technique is called Comprehensible Input whereby the learner should be able to understand most of what is being said despite them not understanding all the words and grammar rules in it. It's theorized that by using this technique as often as possible, one can acquire the language and not forget it (much as a native speaker does) rather than relying on the memorization of words and the rules.
