The glorious era of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom, when Egypt was the envy of the world, went out with a whimper. What came afterward would be a seemingly tumultuous time in Egyptian history that was characterized by political fragmentation, cultural change, rampant corruption and eventually, foreign domination. Egyptologists call the four centuries of so after the New Kingdom era the Third Intermediate Period. The Third Intermediate Period started with the rise of the 21st Dynasty of Egypt, a time in which both pharaohs and priests ruled the kingdom of the Nile in relative peace. This though was the calm before the storm that would eventually sweep in from the east and change the trajectory of Egyptian history forever.
