Family Industries Shop Tour | Live Printing at 400+ Events a Year

We visit Family Industries in Los Angeles to see their rapidly growing screen printing shop. Family Industries are known for doing more than 400 live screen printing events every year – in dozens of states every single month. Masters of logistics, but not sterile or boring, Family Industries has a stunning and unique shop that totally blew us away. With a big upcoming move and hundreds of upcoming live printing events, Family Industries doesn’t have a lot of downtime. Max pointed out a funny thing about moving your printing business: “There’s never enough room. When you move, you think, ‘I’ll never run out of space now!’ You always want more print stations and more room, in the end.” So keep that in mind if you’re planning to relocate or buy a new press – get something you can grow in to! You’ll see their live printing staging area in this tour. It looks like the staging area for a massive concert, with screen printing equipment carefully packed into large black crates. They were preparing for the Little League World Series in Omaha and a Dev Ops conference in San Francisco. They were also planning for more than 15,000 custom printed pins – customers could choose their own names, numbers, and more for a big T-Mobile event. Each event gets its own wrapped pallet – everything is modular, “It’s crazy, because half of our business is contained in this tiny space right here!” Watch Max's in-depth presentation about live printing at PrintHustlers Conf 2019:    • Live Screen Printing Tips & Tricks | ...   Max pointed out a funny thing about moving your print shop: “There’s never enough room. When you move, you think, ‘I’ll never run out of space now!’ You always want more print stations and more room, in the end.” So keep that in mind if you’re planning to relocate or buy a new press – get something you can grow in to! But...what’s next for Family Industries? Max is focused more on developing the live printing side of the business – but there’s still growth happening in their traditional printing operation. They’re not running two shifts yet, but they’re more or less running at full capacity outside of their live printing operation. They’re also moving to a new location, getting two new automatic screen printing presses, and moving their screen room operation as well. Family Industries will run low-quantity samples and other orders (like low-volume DTG printing jobs) at their new location, too. The future of live printing is going to be deeply experiential. It won’t just be handing out shirts – it looks like multi-touch, digitally controlled, totally custom prints – coupled with classic information collection and a follow-up marketing campaign. Family Industries is working closely with a custom app development agency to curate and create these sorts of experiences for big companies – Microsoft, Toyota, and many more. “This is the direction live printing is going. It’s more than apparel. It’s anything tangible that can be customized. We’re becoming an on-site customization agency.” Can we even call it live printing any more? It’s obviously growing into something much more powerful. A huge thanks to Max, Alex, and the entire Family Industries team for welcoming us into their super cool shop.
