Successfully Direct Sowing Seeds with 5 Simple Steps

I talked a lot about starting seeds in trays and then transplanting those seedlings out, but I'm going to mix things up a little bit and talk about DIRECT SOWING. I'll cover how to easily and successfully start seeds in the ground. Although starting seeds in trays is my preferred method, direct sowing definitely has a place and can make sense in some circumstances. For example, some plants do better when direct sown and can get transplant shock. Greens are a great crop to direct sow. I have some Organic Mesclun Mix here that's right along the drip line. We also got some rain over the past week and temperatures are cooling down, so that means I don't have to worry about the soil drying out as much. https://sandiegoseedcompany.com/produ... 2:11 Keys to Success There are a couple of keys to success here. To start, the soil must remain moist. Irrigation is the easiest way to consistently water. You can hand water, of course, but you just need to stay on top of it. The other key is row cover. I put it over the planting area to limit the sunlight hitting the ground as well as keep moisture in the ground. Plus, it keeps (sometimes) the cats from walking all over the baby plants! A third key is to plant into seed starting mix in the ground. Because I mulch so heavily, the in-ground soil can be a little tough for seeds to live in. By sprinkling some seed starting mix on top, I can ensure there won't be sticks sitting on top of the seeds. 6:23 Planting In Action So what does this process actually look like? Let's walk through it. 1) I know this area gets regular water so the soil will be moist. 2) I prep the soil a little bit. Breaking up the soil makes it more light and fluffy which helps with soil retention as well as keeping the soil from getting too compact. This means more water and easier root growth. On the downside, it's not the best for starting seeds. https://sandiegoseedcompany.com/produ... Loose leaf lettuce like this Red Sails is great for direct sowing. 3) I'll just sprinkle seeds right on top of the soil. Nothing too special! After that, I give a light dusting of the seed starting mix on top of that because there won't be any large particles on top of the seeds. 4) Now it's time to water with a very gentle setting so we don't wash away any soil or seeds. 5) As a final step, I take precautionary measures with the row cover. If you live in an area that doesn't get too warm or that gets regular rain, you may be able to skip this last step. In as little as a couple of days or as much as a week, I should see seedlings popping up! I'm not too worried about overcrowding because these are a loose-leaf variety, and I'll harvest them as I need them with the cut-and-come-again method. KEEP LEARNING →Want more gardening tips?
