In this biology video in Hindi for Class 10 we explained what heredity is and how Gregor Johann Mendel conducted experiments on pea plants to establish the rules of heredity. This is a topic from chapter 9 - 'Heredity and Evolution' From NCERT for class 10. Heredity, also called biological inheritance, is the passing on of traits from parents to their offspring. The offspring cells or organisms acquire the genetic information of their parents. A gene is a region of DNA that encodes functions, like, synthesis of a specific protein. A chromosome consists of a long strand of DNA containing many genes. A human chromosome can have thousands of genes. One or several genes decides bodily functions, like, synthesis of a specific protein. These proteins decide the traits of an organism. Hence, the transmission of genes to an organism's offspring is the basis of the inheritance of traits. Gregor Mendel was a biologist and a mathematician. His pea plant experiments established many of the rules of heredity, now referred to as the laws of Mendelian inheritance. Mendel investigated characters in the garden pea plant that were manifested as two opposing traits, e.g., tall or dwarf plants, round or wrinkled seeds, yellow or green seeds, violet or white flower etc. Law of Dominance : 1. Characters are controlled by discrete units called factors which occur in pairs. 2. In a dissimilar pair of factors one member of the pair dominates (dominant) the other (recessive).
