In this video we visit Hamilton, a station on the Newcastle Railway Line in the inner suburbs of the regional city of Newcastle. Hamilton is served by NSW Trainlink passenger trains on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line between Sydney and Newcastle, and the Hunter Line between Newcastle and Dungong or Scone. Here we see V Set and Oscar (H Set) EMU's, and Hunter Railcars. We mostly see trains on the station platforms (mostly platform 2 as that was sunny side) and the station footbridge, plus a couple of clips from the adjacent Beaumont Street level crossing. Hamilton serves as the junction for the Newcastle Railway Line and the Main North Line which links Sydney and Newcastle. It functions as a triangle junction; from the station trains turn left south towards Sydney, and head straight to head north towards Maitland and beyond. Hamilton station opened in 1872, around 15 years after the first railway line in Newcastle opened in 1857. Hamilton is on the State Heritage Register for its state significance to New South Wales. The station building on platform 1 was constructed in 1875 but was substantially altered in 1898, around the same time the building on platform 2 was provided. Hamilton station is the only surviving 'heritage' station on the Newcastle Railway Line. The other stations at Wickham, Civic, and Newcastle were closed on the 25 December 2014 as part of the truncation of the line. Hamilton served as the temporary terminus of the line until the new Newcastle Interchange station opened on the 15th October 2017. Date: April 2023.
