See the mesmerizing creation of a Ukrainian Easter egg

Ukrainian Easter eggs, known as pysanky, are a thousands of years old art using wax resist and dye to stencil the ornate traditional designs of the Ukraine as well as several other Eastern European cultures. Linda Evans, a retired school art teacher, will be leading a class in Pysanka painting March 18 at the First United Methodist Church located on 116 W. Grove St. in Oneida. The workshop is sponsored by The Madison County Historical Society's Handicrafts workshop series. Evans taught art in Verona and later in the Oneida County School District. Her home has boxes and boxes of fantastically designed eggs; most she designed herself, and many she collected. Of course, there is a good reason to have so many she says. "The more eggs you have, the luckier you will be." The method of wax resist, or batik, to use the Javanese term, allows an artist to paint intricate wax beads into a pattern that resists dye absorption by the object being painted, and create dazzling designs.
