Pepper Ave/West Colton Railfanning 5/6/14!!!

Watch in HD!!! After spending the afternoon at the Ontario Amtrak Station, I decided to check off another location on the Railfan Bucket List, the Pepper Avenue Overpass overlooking the West Colton Rail Yard. On this day, I experienced probably one of my best days ever railfanning by seeing lots of rare power, multiple meets, and plenty of rail action the three hours I spent there. Also, I got to meet some another railfan that day that works on the irrigation in and around UP's West Colton Yard. Information about each clip to follow: Intro - This shot shows the various trains sitting in the yard waiting for their clearance to leave West Colton. There is also a BNSF Train siting in the yard which I believe is rare being that West Colton is a Union Pacific yard. #1: The first train that I catch is some Union Pacific switchers backing up some mixed freight cars into the West Colton rail yard. UP 1574 - UP SD40N UP 1789 - UP SD40N UP 1703 - UP SD40N #2: Now coming through the yard off the UP Yuma Subdivison is this Westbound Union Pacific loaded coal train. UP 7624 - GE ES44AC UP 6382 - GE AC4400CW UP 6388 - GE AC4400CW (DPU) UP 8670 - EMD SD70ACe (DPU) #3: After dropping off the cars, the switchers method in #1 switch tracks and resumes it work inside the rail yard. #4: Now coming out of the yard is this Union Pacific Earth Train as it makes it's way up the Palmdale Cutoff and stops on the hill to dump it's dirt for the work going on up on the hill there. As it makes it way to the hill, the doublestack parked over on the main gets a clear signal and highballs it way east. UP 5093 - EMD SD70M UP 4527 - EMD SD70M #5: As a squirrel runs away from the tracks, another UP light engine movement moves from one track to another inside the yard. UP 8733 - EMD SD70ACe UP 8646 - EMD SD70ACe UP 4224 - EMD SD70M #6: My first highlight of the day comes with this Eastbound UP Empty Coal train in which the last locomotive in the consist is a very rare unpatched Southern Pacific unit. This train would come to a stop down the line as there will be a lot of westbound traffic to come. UP 5605 - GE AC4400CW-CTE UP 6574 - GE AC4400CW UP 6806 - GE AC4400CW SP 107 - GE AC4400CW #7: The next Westbound to come though West Colton is this Union Pacific Doublestack heading towards Los Angeles. UP 7398 - GE ES44AC UP 3790 - EMD SD70M UP 6081 - GE AC4400CW-CTE UP 8694 - EMD SD70ACe (DPU) UP 7379 - GE ES44AC (DPU) #8: As the empty coal train proceeds East on the UP Yuma Subdivision, the construction crews use the hydraulics of the gondola cars to empty the earth/dirt onto the hill behind the train. Then, the empty train reverses back into the yard to be filled with more dirt. #9: As a pair of SD60M moves some cars in the yard, an Eastbound Union Pacific Manifest gets the clearance to leave West Colton Yard with the lead engine being the one that was moving other engines in and around the yard. UP 8733 - EMD SD70ACe UP 4777 - EMD SD70M UP 7987 - GE ES44AC (DPU) #10: The action in the yard picks up again as a Union Pacific Powermove switches from one track to another. UP 6928 - GE AC6044CW UP 6286 - GE AC4400CW UP 5375 - GE ES44AC UP 5373 - GE ES44AC UP 5357 - GE ES44AC UP 5374 - GE ES44AC #11: The second highlight of the day comes during this meet of two Union Pacific Manifests. First, presumably the UP M-WCRV departs West Colton and heads up the Palmdale Cutoff towards the Cajon Pass. As this happens, a Westbound Union Pacific Manifest comes off the UP Yuma Subdivison with a ex Southern Pacific leader with flashing ditch lights, a CSX unit in the consist as well as some military trucks near the front of the train. This train however is not over with surprises as one of the mid train helpers is none other that a KCS unit in Southern Belle livery. Easily one of the best trains that I have seen in my railfanning days!!! UP M-WCRV: UP 7393 - GE ES44AC UP 8081 - GE ES44AC UP 8097 - GE ES44AC UP 5436 - GE ES44AC UP 5474 - GE ES44AC (DPU) WB UP Manifest: UP (ex SP) 6307 - GE AC4400CW UP 5459 - GE ES44AC CSX 7785 - GE C40-8W UP 7622 - GE ES44AC (Mid-Train DPU) KCS 3969 - EMD SD70MAC (Mid-Train DPU) #12: Now over on the other side of Pepper Avenue, I catch GATX 7000 (MPI MP14B) shuffling some tank cars in the facility. #13: Yet another Union Pacific Powermove does some switching in and around the West Colton Rail Yard. UP 8702 - EMD SD70ACe UP 2413 - EMD SD60M UP 2501 - EMD SD60M UP 2293 - EMD SD60M UP 8454 - EMD SD70ACe #14: The final train that I catch at the Pepper Avenue overpass is this Westbound Union Pacific Manifest as it makes it way towards Los Angeles with a variety of power on it. UP 7792 - GE ES44AC UP 9386 - GE C40-8W UP 5634 - GE AC4400CW-CTE UP 4809 - EMD SD70M UP 6728 - GE AC4400CW UP 7342 - GE AC6044CW Please feel free to like, comment, and/or leave feedback as it is greatly appreciated.
