Historian Stephen Kotkin: On USA vs China power competition, American advantages, and more (1/3)

This video presents clips from a lecture by Stephen Kotkin, an academic, author and America’s preeminent historian on the USSR/Russia, geopolitics, and authoritarian regimes. Kotkin has been a professor of History and International Affairs at Princeton since 1989, and is a Senior Fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution. His lecture to the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, Austria touched on a wide range of topics, including Russia, for which he is best known, as a Stalin biographer. The first volume of his three-part biography on Stalin was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In this video, I’ve edited and clipped out the parts of Kotkin’s presentation addressing China (as well as added in maps and relevant graphics at various points in his presentation). Topics include historical context for China’s rise in a U.S. dominated world, American advantages in this great power struggle, Xi Jinping and the Chinese sphere of influence in Asia , and whether we’re headed for a new global equilibrium or confrontation. Although this presentation was given in April, 2017, Professor Kotkin’s insights are still as relevant today as they were back then.
