Scoglio d'immota fronte from the opera Scipione, HWV 20 (1726) George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) Sandrine Piau, soprano Les Talens Lyriques under Christophe Rousset   The role of Berenice was written for Italian soprano Francesca Cuzzoni (1696-1778). She was a member of Handel's Royal Academy of Music, and he created nine roles for her, the most famous today being Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare and the title-role in Rodelinda.   Scipione had its premiere on March 12, 1726 at the King's Theatre, Haymarket.  Handel composed Scipione for the Royal Academy of Music whilst in the middle of writing Alessandro to delay for the arrival of Faustina Bordoni, who would make her London debut on May 5, 1726 in Alessandro alongside Cuzzoni and Senesino. In the Act II aria ‘Scoglio d’immota fronte,’ Berenice swears undying fidelity to her first love, comparing herself to a rock unmoved by tempestuous seas.
