Chipping Sodbury Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Gloucestershire, and around 10 miles northeast of Bristol, is the town of Chipping Sodbury. Geographically, Chipping Sodbury is situated at the southwestern fringe of the Cotswolds, adjacent to the River Frome around four miles from its source. Its name is derived from Old English 'Soppanbyrig', meaning 'Soppa's fort', whilst its prefix means 'market'. During the 12th Century the owner of the Sodbury Estates, William Crassus, planned a new town based on a grid pattern, with long strips of land known as burgage plots with narrow dwellings fronting the wide market street, the layout of which remains largely unaltered today. In 1227 a market charter was granted to the settlement, around which point the 'Chipping' prefix was added, helping to distinguish it from the neighbouring village of Old Sodbury. The town saw prosperity in the medieval era due to its its weaving and leather trades. At the heart of the town is the Church of St John the Baptist. This dates back to the 13th century, with later additions in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The church is Grade I listed. In 1903 a railway station opened in Chipping Sodbury. This was a stop on the South Wales Main Line which today runs between Swindon and Swansea. The station closed to passengers in 1961, and to goods in 1966. Today, public transport to Chipping Sodbury consists of direct buses from Bristol, Bath, Stroud and various other nearby settlements. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
