The Chausath Yogini Temple located in Mitaoli is also known as Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple, is known to be 14th-century temple in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh. It was built during Kachchhapaghata reign, and is known to be one of most the well-preserved Yogini temples in India. The temple is made by a circular wall which has 64 chambers, which are there for 64 yoginis and the goddess Devi. The temple also has an open mandap which is located at the centre of a circular courtyard, which is known to be sacred to lord Shiva. As per an inscription which dates back to 1323 CE (Vikram Samvat 1383), the temple was built by the Kachchhapaghata king Devapala. It is said that this mysterious temple was known to be the venue of astrology and mathematics education based on the Sun's transit. The ASI has declared the Chausath Yogini temple an ancient as well as historical monument under Act No. LXXI of 1951, dt.28/11/1951. The temple is situated on a hill top which is at about 100 feet (30 m) in height; there are 200 steps to climb up to the temple's entrance. This temple is circular in shape and has a radius of 170 feet (52 m), and inside it you will see has 64 small chambers, each has a mandapa which is open and has a facia of pilasters and pillars. The roof of the temple's ring is flat, as is that of the central shrine to Shiva; the circular courtyard is actually hypaethral, and is open to the sky, along with an open porch as its entrance. The Indian parliament house's design is said to have been based on this temple. The exterior surface of the temple's outer wall, unlike other Yogini temples in India which are quite plain outside, was well decorated with statues of couples that were flanked by maidens, are mostly now lost or are badly damaged. Each of the 64 chambers around the inside of the temple's perimeter wall has an image of Shiva. However, originally all these contained 64 Yogini images and as well as one image of the great goddess Devi. Therefore, the temple is known as Chausath Yogini Temple (Chausath being the Hindi for the number "Sixty four"). It is believed that the roofs over the 64 chambers and the central shrine had towers or shikharas, as those at the Chausath Yogini Temple, in Khajuraho still do, but that these were known to be removed during later enhancements. The central temple's roofing slabs are perforated in order to allow rainwater to drain through pipes which goes to a large underground tank. The temple is known to be located in the Seismic Zone III region and has also survived several earthquakes, that too without any serious damage. This fact was known to be cited when the issue of safety from earthquake effect of the circular designed Parliament House, its design is known to be supposedly based on the Mitaoli temple, was well debated in the Indian Parliament. #64yogini #morena #madhyapradesh #mp #temple #aghori #tantra #mantra #yantra
