The biggest Monastery and the the Crown Jewel of the Spiti Valley. This is the Key Monastery. Ki, Kye, Key, Kee (pronounced English ‘Key’) The Monastery was built in the 11th Century by Dromtön. The Monastery follows the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Also knows as The Yellow Hat sect. During its lifetime, the Monastery has been attacked the Mongols, the Dogras, British Indian Army and even suffered severe damage from fire and earthquake. The gompa is an irregular heap of low rooms and narrow corridors on a monolithic conical hill and is famous for its Pasada style architecture. A visitor is greeted at the entrance of the Monastery by a series of praying wheels (‘Mani’). They are to be spun clockwise so that the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” written on the wheels passes the viewer in the order it is meant to be chanted. The Gompa is spread over three floors with the Underground floor mainly utilized for storage; The Ground floor has the assembly hall, called Du-Khang with small rooms for monks and the Kitchen. Top floor houses the library which has ancient murals, Thangkas, rare manuscripts, stucco images and peculiar wind instruments. The Gompa is also famous for its collection of weapons which were used to ward off marauders in the past. From the outside the Gompa looks like a huge fortress but it was not originally built with that intent. Successive trails of destruction have resulted in a haphazard growth of the monastery. The new rooms have been built in such a way that it makes it look like a big fortress. Monastery is the home for approximately 250 practicing monks and many more studying Buddhism. As per the tradition, one child from each family is sent an early age to study Buddhism in the Monastery. After completing their education in the monastery, they decide whether to leave the monastery and live a normal life or continue the life of a monk and spread the word of Buddhism. The Monastery also plans to build an old age home to take care of the old monks who are unable to take care of themselves. The monastery is also the cultural hub of the valley as they host the annual Gustar Festival (pronounced as ‘Guettar’). People from throughout the valley gather in the Monastery to attend the festival where the monks perform the famous Chham (mask) dance. The dance signifies a series of rituals used to ward off evil spirit and shows triumph of good over evil. From the Monastery a person can get a glimpse of the vastness of the valley with the Frozen Spiti river flowing like a giant serpent. The beauty in the calmness of the nature is mesmerising. After visiting the Monastery we realise that money cannot buy peace but it can only be achieved by detaching ourselves from the material things in life. The quintessential life means finding true happiness and peace by finding ourselves through nature.
