Pearl Modern Utility 14x6.5 Steel Snare Review : Bearded Drums (Episode 47)

In this week's episode we take a look at the Pearl Modern Utility 14x6.5 steel snare drum. The Modern Utility line by Pearl was initially offered in maple with many different sizes to choose from. Now, with the popularity of this line Pearl has added tom it to include two steel shell models. A "14x5.5 model and the one we look at today, a "14x6.5 model. These drums feature a 1mm beaded steel shell, textured satin finish, CL arch lugs, SR 700 strainer and triple flanged hoops. These snares like their maple counterparts are very budget friendly with the 14x5.5 model coming in at $149.00 and the 14x6.5 model at $179.00. These steel snares a billed as having great punch at full attack yet still remaining crisp and sensitive at lower volumes. I have a ton of experience with Pearl snare drums but this is the first steel shell I have ever owned. I am used to mainly playing brass and maple shells so this was a nice change to the types of sounds I have grown accustomed to. After a couple of weeks and several different types of gigs I have found this snare to be versatile and able to adapt to different sixes if venues. It has a very fat punch yet still remains crisp for more intricate playing. Especially considering it's price this a great snare for anyone on a budget that still wants a good quality product or a player just looking for something different fro their current snare lineup.
