Black Women and Generational Silencing | Cassandra Moultrie | TEDxFarmingdale

Black women, have lived under a “code of silence’ for generations since slavery. This generational silencing is a legacy that still exists for many and spills into the learning spaces, workplace and the community, often with an unawareness of the impact it carries. We can all work to break this legacy by acknowledging the generational condition of silence, understanding the sources and choosing to address silencing in practice when seen. We owe it to the next generation of young black girls to create opportunities for them to own their voices, to know that what they have to say is of value, and to be self-expressed in any setting. Cassandra Moultrie is a mother, health information management revenue compliance auditor, international trainer, mentor, certified Cognitive Behavioral Coach and founder of Her Voice Her Story, LLC. Her work has taken her both across the US and outside the country, She enjoys the challenge of working at startups and being in the entrepreneurial space. A life-long learner, she embraces change and believes in the power of possibilities. Cassandra believes it's important to remain authentic to yourself and to boldly color outside the lines. She is an advocate for women using their voices and story to promote inspiration and change in the lives of others. Faith, unconditional love and the strength of her ancestors are what sustains Cassandra in all endeavors. She enjoys travel, reading, attending the opera, volunteering, floral arranging and great conversation with friends. She is the host/content creator for Her Voice Her Story Podcast and is a proud graduate of Florida A & M University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
