Andrew Jackson's First Hermitage

Join the ‪@BobbleheadGeorge‬ crew for a look at Andrew Jackson's FIRST Hermitage! The Hermitage mansion that people visit today wasn’t the only home to Jackson that stands on the property. From 1804 to 1821 a two-story log farmhouse was home to Andrew Jackson and his family. Jackson had many important visitors while living here, including former Aaron Burr and the 5th President of the United States James Monroe. Skilled craftsmen constructed the two-story farmhouse for Nathaniel Hays, the original owner of the Hermitage Property. Jackson bought the property and farmhouse from Hays in 1804. The structure had a large single room on the first floor, and the upstairs contained two bedchambers, a stair hall, and attic loft. Before moving in, Jackson hired a local French-speaking craftsman to dress up the interior. Jackson converted the farmhouse into quarters for the enslaved workers, reconfiguring the old farmhouse into a one-story cabin. Jackson made significant alterations, including the elimination of all window glass and interior doors, as well as the removal of wallpaper and trim. Today, the structure stands as a symbol of the conflict between the democratic principles championed by Jackson and the institution of slavery.
