Mitropoulos, Francescatti, NY Philharmonic perform Saint-Saens 1950

An electrifying performance of Camille Saint-Saens’ Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No 3 in B minor (op 61) by the NY Philharmonic on January 22nd, 1950 conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos and featuring Zino Francescatti on violin. The performance was broadcast nationally by CBS, and locally in Minnesota by WCCO. Reynolds Marchant clearly had special access to the radio station’s line to record this performance in such high fidelity (though it is a bit boomy in the loud parts). What’s interesting is the very next night - January 23 - the NY Philharmonic performed this piece for Columbia Masterworks: https://www.discogs.com/release/33925... At first I wasn’t going to post this because I saw multiple people had posted it on YouTube. However, many of those video listed Jan 23 as the date of performance. I checked the excellent and very complete NY Philharmonic archives and there was NO performance on Jan 23 1950. Which means it was a private recording session for Columbia Masterworks. The 22nd’s performance is listed here: http://tiny.cc/4gpkzz Plus if you listen to the Columbia Masterworks record, or the postings of it on YouTube there is clearly no audience - no coughing, no Jim Fassett, no applause at the end. I was also able to verify with the separate NY Philharmonic radio archive that there was a broadcast on the 22nd. So, like many of the apparently lost CBS NY Philharmonic broadcasts I have - this may be the only remaining copy outside of another private collection.
