Bells Brewery Black Note Stout - 2016 is an Imperial Stout and it clocks in at 10.0% ABV. Bells Brewery describes their Bells Brewery Black Note Stout - 2016 as follows: "One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell's history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout, each aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso and dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark." This all sounds quite nice. Lets see if Bells Brewery Black Note Stout - 2016 lives up to the tempting prose. My written review and report card for Bells Brewery Black Note Stout - 2016 follows: Bells Brewery Black Note Stout - 2016 WRITTEN REVIEW: A: Bells Brewery Black Note Stout - 2016 fully opaque black with an off-white 1.5 - 2 finger dense creamy head that has plenty of staying power. Plenty of alcohol legs and decent glass lacing cling to the inside of the glass. S: In your face with chocolate, dark roast coffee, dark roast malt, some dark fruit, caramel and earthiness. There is a nice Bourbon aroma but it is much more muted than expected. No alcohol is apparent in the nose. T: Follows the nose with chocolate, dark roast coffee, dark roast malt, some dark fruit, caramel and earthiness. There is a nice Bourbon taste but it is much more muted than expected. No alcohol is apparent in the taste. M: Medium to medium full bodied. Easy to drink with spot on carbonation. Goes down almost too smooth. Superbly hidden alcohol. Drinks more like a modern day imperial porter than a stout. O: Bells Brewery Black Note Stout - 2016 is a tasty, well made beer that is highly drinkable, but does not pack quite the flavor complexity as suggested by the label or by the hype. The main down fall for me is the light Bourbon flavor profile. This fact aside, it is a highly quaffable brew and one that I would drink again but not necessarily seek out.
