It is a valuable tool for monitoring changes in water quality and is particularly useful for managing coastal and inland water resources. In this article, we will discuss what NDSI is and how to calculate it using two popular GIS software programs: QGIS and ArcMap. Understanding NDSI (Salinity): NDSI (Salinity) is based on the principle that different concentrations of dissolved salts in water affect the way it interacts with electromagnetic radiation. In areas with high salinity, water absorbs more energy in certain spectral bands, such as the near-infrared, and reflects less energy in the visible spectrum. Conversely, in areas with low salinity, water absorbs less energy in the near-infrared and reflects more energy in the visible spectrum.
