Checking in on the Cellar: Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2016-2019

The Armagh vineyard in the Clare Valley was planted in 1968, and is the source of the single vineyard Armagh Shiraz. This is the icon wine of Jim Barry wines, and it's a great look into the definition and complexity that Clare Valley is capable of. Essentially, the reds in this region come by colour and flavour with ease, but it is only the best producers and sites that are capable of coaxing a complex array of flavour from the grapes, that span sweet, and opulent, through to savoury, spiced and complex. This wine has it all. Cool to note that while all the wines are drinking well now, they will live an age beyond tomorrow, so cellaring is really recommended. - 0:00 - Intro 2:02 - How they're looking as a bracket of wines 2:25 - 2019 The Armagh Shiraz - Hold 4:36 - 2018 The Armagh Shiraz - Definitely hold - the standout wine here 5:36 - 2017 The Armagh Shiraz - Drink/hold 6:26 - 2016 The Armagh Shiraz - Hold/drink - Link to some first class free reading on this wine, which details a significant vertical - good to fill out some earlier vintages if you're curious: https://www.jimbarry.com/vintage-journal - Any review you see on my socials (  / erinllarkin  , this channel and my website (https://www.erinlarkin.com.au) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I. - To give you an idea, here is a tasting note from the 2019 that I reviewed in January 2022: "Individual blocks from within the Armagh vineyard (planted 1968). This is a big, savoury, meaty shiraz with layers and layers of concentrated purple fruits, hung deli meat, salted licorice, heirloom tomatoes, amaro herbs, freshly grated nutmeg, bay leaf and clove. The magical thing about this wine is actually not the flavours themselves (although impressive), but the way they spool out over the palate and through the extremely long, seemingly interminable finish. It is unfailingly consistent, the tannins fine and omnipresent. The whole package densely and patiently unfurls in the mouth. The wine is a masterpiece. Forever awaits. 97 pts"
