It is the state of Manipur. Manipur is a state in northeastern India, known for its rich history and diverse ethnic makeup. It shares borders with Myanmar and several other Indian states like Nagaland, Mizoram, and Assam. The state has a population of approximately 2.8 million, with Imphal as its capital. The recent clashes in Manipur, which began in May 2023, are rooted in ethnic tensions between the majority Meitei community and the Kuki and other tribal groups. The immediate cause of the violence was the Manipur High Court's directive to consider granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meiteis, a move opposed by the Kuki community as it could affect their land and employment rights. This sparked protests that escalated into violent clashes, resulting in significant loss of life and displacement of thousands of people. The violence has been exacerbated by the involvement of armed groups and a lack of effective governance, leading to widespread suffering, especially among the most vulnerable populations.
