If You're Interested In Military Tattoos-Here's What You Need To Know!

Going to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been on my bucket list for a long time. A long time friend told us about the Tattoo. He was the director for the Southeast Missouri State Golden Eagles Marching Band and they were the 4th University ever invited to perform at the Edinburgh Tattoo. They performed not only in 1999 but also in 2008. The Edinburgh Tattoo 2022 "A Celebration of Expression" is quite the taptoe event. The Tattoo is located on the esplanade of the Edinburgh Castle. We went online and purchased "The Piper's Package" about a year ago. This package allowed us to soak up the electric atmosphere of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Our adventure began at the Scottish National Gallery. We gathered there to enjoy dinner at the Scottish Cafe & Restaurant. The cafe looks out over the Princess Street Gardens towards Arthur's Seat. After supper, a traditional Highland piper lead us via Ramsay Lane into the seating area. We were served Glengoyne Scotch and mulled wine along with a two course meal. This was the first time to try both and I really enjoyed each. The Edinburgh Tattoo was AMAZING! We were seated in section 13 of the arena. The Tattoo is performed every August for 3 weeks by British, Commonwealth InternationalMilitary Bands at the Edinburgh Castle esplanade. The arena hold 8,800 people each night which means almost a quarter of a million people will see the always sold out Tattoo. The Tattoo is the highlight of the Edinburgh Fringe and International Festival. The Tattoo begins with a fanfare that is specifically written for each year. This year the theme was "A Celebration of Expression". Then the traditional piper and drum bands perform. After this the International groups perform. The highlight for us was when the United States Military bands performed. The Top Secret Drum Corp was also exceptional! Be sure to notice the water that pours off the drums! Our experience at the Tattoo was different and unique! The constant rain did get us wet but in many ways added to the atmosphere of the evening.
