One of the most historic industries in Rhode Island is facing the reality of its aging workforce. Commercial fishing's future is threatened without a fresh infusion of young workers. The Commercial Fisheries Center of Rhode Island partnered with the University of Rhode Island and state government agencies to create a registered apprenticeship that serves as an entry point to the diverse careers offered by this valuable industry. Industry experts pass on fundamental knowledge in this free 20-day crew training program that combines hands-on training with classroom instruction. The curriculum's focus on safety, sustainability and seamanship provide apprentices the head start to good-paying jobs in this industry.
