Speaker: Simon Eng, Research Meteorologist, Northern Hail Project Summary: Post-event forensic investigations of impacts from natural hazards have proven to be invaluable for the development of risk reduction measures as well as improving our scientific understanding of those events. While traditionally executed for a subset of hazards – mainly extreme winds, earthquakes, and fires – this work can be expanded to study other hazards that are not addressed as often, such as damaging hail events. This talk will address research conducted by Western University’s Northern Hail Project (NHP) focusing on recent investigations of highly damaging hail events in Canada, including this summer’s $2.8 Billion storm that affected the City of Calgary, Alberta. The purpose of such investigations is to obtain highly granular information on both the meteorological characteristics of these storms as well the detailed documentation of impacts. The development of new hail-specific investigative approaches and methods draws directly from related work on severe thunderstorm winds (i.e., tornadoes and downbursts) as well as crime scene investigation techniques. Preliminary findings from these investigations will then be presented.
