Diss & The Waveney Valley - Winter 1947

Incredible 8mm black and white cine footage of Diss, in South Norfolk, and the Waveney Valley filmed by my grandfather during the harsh winter of 1947. I've added locations via onscreen captions where I can but have also left in his original captions too. The film starts with footage of the Bartrums haulage company yard on Victoria Road in Diss and then moves on to some wonderful scenes of the Mere in the centre of town which had frozen over, crowded with people skating. Once the thaw came, the snow melted quickly causing major flooding all along the Waveney Valley. We see footage of cars and trucks going through the floods in the village of Scole. My grandfather presumably then traveled along what would have been the old main road between Scole and Bungay, filming more scenes of the floods along the way. There are certainly shots of the swollen river at Shotford Bridge, near Harleston, flooded fields at Earsham and then footage of a submerged Bungay Football Club ground. This film is part of a collection of cine footage of Norfolk, shot by my grandfather Stanley Arthur Youngs between the 1930s and 1950s. Born and bred in South Norfolk and a baker by trade, my grandfather was also a keen amateur cine photographer with a passion for creating films of rural Norfolk life which he delighted in showing to people in a makeshift cinema in the bakehouse.
