It can be visited along with Taj Mahal . It was the main fort of the Mughal rulers and the remnants of the fort speak volumes about thier heritage, culture and dynasty. A 16th century structure, Agra Fort still stands strong as an impeccable and imposing structure. Definitely recommended to visit as part of Delhi and Agra trip. The fort can be described as a walled city . Th fort was initially known as ''Badalgarh" in a ruined condition and Akbar rebuilt Agra fort with red sandstone. After Akbar, Shah Jahan destroyed some of the old buildings in Agra fort and made his own in white marble which we can see even today in Agra Fort. At the end of his life, Shah Jahan was imprisoned in the same Agra fort by his son Aurangazeb. In early 18th century, the Agra fort was captured by the Marathas. It was lost by the Marathas to the British in 1803. Agra fort is equally as important a site to visit as Taj Mahal not just because of its architecture, grandness but also to understand the history of India and the changes that followed.
