BONUS POINTS for teaching prepositions while incorporating DAILY ROUTINES! *doing laundry, making dinner, putting clothes away, cleaning up, taking dishes out of dishwasher, playing at the park, etc Prepositions are typically acquired between 13 months - 24 months for typically developing children and most are mastered by 36 months. Basic Prepositions: In, out, on, off Intermediate Prepositions: on top, under/beneath, below, above, together, apart Advanced Prepositions: in front of, behind, between, beside/next to, around, near, far **Teach Comprehension FIRST (receptive language) RECEPTIVE - making sure the child UNDERSTANDS the concept: Step 1) YOU do the work "SHOW me / POINT to ____ " (ball IN the box) with two options presented (one ball in the box, one ball under or next to a box) continue to provide 2 options until 5 trials are correct! Step 2) Practice and EXPAND on this concept by generalizing the skill: change up the box to another object OR the ball and continue targeting the same concept (in) such as "show me BALL in cup" or "BEAR in box" - same concept, alternating manipulatives Step 3) FINALLY, ask the child to DO it! "Here's ball! Put ball IN box!" Overexaggerate the word to draw attention to it for when we CHANGE the word! (OUT, NEXT TO, ETC) Continue these steps to teach each preposition indepdently. PLAYY with the barn and animals - Ask your child to get the labeled animals (get cow! Put Cow ON train!) CHOO CHOO!! Cow is ON Train! YAYY!!" Take cow OFF!! YAY! Cow is OFF! Put cow IN Barn!! YAYY! COW is IN the barn!!" You did it!! **** REPEAT OVER AND OVER AGAIN WITH ALL ANIMALS! Boom! Now you have them following instructions, using verbal routines, understanding prepositions and completing a play routine!! YOU CAN DO IT! EXPRESSIVE PREPOSITIONS: Step 1) make sure your child understands all of the prepositions that you've taught them via previous steps and examples Step 2) ask "WHERE'S COW?!" or "where'd go?!" for even simpler language, use a gesture to model "where go?!" Step 3) WAIT. That's it. Just WAIT - give your child time to respond Step 4) Model the correct answer if the child's answer is not correct - SHOW them why the cow is IN the barn and not ON the barn or my favorite "right there!" Step 5) repeat same question - using different object to assess if the understood the concept! "Where'd Horse Go?!" then repeat previous 2 steps. That's all folks!
