It honors Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, and typically lasts for 10 days. Here's a description: During this festival, Mumbai comes alive with colorful decorations, elaborate idols of Lord Ganesha, and a sense of immense joy and devotion. The preparations begin months in advance as artisans create intricate Ganesha idols in various sizes, styles, and designs. On the first day of the festival, the city witnesses grand processions as idols are brought to homes, public pandals (temporary shrines), and community centers. These processions are accompanied by lively music, dancing, and enthusiastic devotees. The atmosphere is filled with chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya," which means "Lord Ganesha, come back soon." Throughout the ten days, Mumbai's streets are adorned with lights and decorations, and the entire city seems to be in a festive spirit. People visit various pandals to offer prayers, seek blessings, and admire the creativity in idol-making. Many of these pandals are famous for their innovative themes and extravagant decorations. On the last day, known as Anant Chaturdashi, the idols are taken in grand processions to the sea or other bodies of water for immersion (Visarjan). This symbolic act marks the farewell of Lord Ganesha as he returns to his heavenly abode. The visarjan processions are accompanied by immense fanfare and emotions, as people bid farewell with tears and promises to welcome Ganesha again the following year. Ganesh Chaturthi transcends religious boundaries and brings people of all backgrounds together to celebrate the spirit of unity, devotion, and cultural richness in Mumbai. It's a time when the city truly shines with its unique blend of tradition and festivity.
