Leave a comment and tell me about your favourite Christmas tradition! In this video, Jessica the Museum Guide (that’s me!) takes you on a detailed guided tour of the Museum of the Home, located in East London. Walking through ten rooms decorated for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Diwali, she explains the interesting and complex past of many of our modern holiday traditions. 0:00 – A brief history of the Museum of the Home 2:14 - Tudor/Stuart Christmas in 1630 5:49 - Puritan visit to the Frost Fair in 1683 9:51 - Sephardi Hanukkah in London in 1745 14:04 - Georgian Boxing Day in 1790 15:46 - Regency-Era Twelfth Night Celebrations in 1830 19:07 - Victorian Christmas Eve in 1870 22:27 - Edwardian Christmas in 1913 25:00 - Christmas Between the Wars in 1937 26:52 - British Caribbean Christmas in 1978 29:05 - British Indian Diwali and Christmas in 1987 The entire museum is filled with wonder and festive spirit this time of year – join me! We start in 1630 with a Stuart Christmas, a stately room decked with evergreen boughs and a traditional boar’s head to feast upon, and talk about the legacy of Tudor traditions. Next, we head to a frost fair with a Puritan family in 1683 – for them, Christmas is a somber and understated affair. In 1745, we experience a Sephardi Jewish Hannukah and talk about the history of Judaism in the UK, followed by a 1790 Boxing Day as we pack up our revelry and decorations. In 1830, we enter a Regency-era sitting room for a Twelfth Night celebration, complete with cheeky charades and fancy-dress costumes. Heading to a warm and cosy 1870 sitting room, we wander through the wonder of Victorian Christmas, detailing the history of the Christmas tree and cards. Next, we meet the big man himself in 1913 – Santa Claus, aka Father Christmas, right on the eve of World War One. Between the wars, we check out an art deco bachelor pad with scant few decorations other than an increasingly popular fake tree, before heading to a British Caribbean Christmas in Hackney. It’s 1978, the Winter of Discontent, so let’s gather around the paraffin heater and play some dominoes and cards! Our final room, 1987, is a British Indian front room decorated in a mix of Diwali and Christmas decorations - these two holidays have a surprising amount in common! As always, thanks for watching.
