March of Narva (Fife and Drum, Sheet Music)

The "Narva March" (also referred to as the March of Narva, the "Narvamarschen" or the "Narvan marssi") is a Swedish military march, commonly used as a funeral march, especially in Finnish and Estonian state or military funerals. The march can be traced back to 1797, as "Marsch nyttjad då Carl XII:e nalkades Narva" ("The March used as Charles XII approached Narva"). Note: There are some sources online which refer to this as the "Nylands och Tavastehus" March, more specifically the "Nylands och Tavastehus Cavalry March". However, there are reasons to believe this may be dodgy, the Nyland and Tavastehus County Cavalry Regiment, which this march is presumably named after, didn't participate in the Battle of Narva, and this name seems to have first appeared in a fife and drum mod for "Empire: Total War" (not exactly the most reliable of sources). The sheet music for this march is easily available on-line, the drum part being composed by myself. The tempo used in this video is specifically 63 bpm. The images are as follows: 1. "Bringing Home the Body of King Charles XII" by Gustaf Cederström, painted in 1878, depicting Charles XII of Sweden, killed at Fredriksten in 1718. 2. "Wounded Warrior in the Snow" by Helene Schjerfbeck, depicting a Swedish soldier during the Finnish War of 1808-1809, and influenced by "The Tales of Ensign Stål," written by Johan Ludvig Runeberg. 3. "The final Swedish charge" by Magnus Adlercreutz, depicting the Battle of Oravais in 1808 during the Finnish War. 4. A photograph of the state funeral of Baron Mannerheim in 1951 in Helsinki, where the Narva March was played.
