Kevin Murning - Crimson Sphere (Original Video)

Kevin Murning’s “Crimson Sphere” off his debut release “Mode’s Arp” is an exploration of the structuring of disorder and chance through the ideas of syncopation and movement. The core rhythmic and melodic motifs of the piece were created through improvisatory processes, structured by mechanised and human decision making within a predetermined set of boundaries. These elements were then structured into an emotional and dynamic piece, with ideas of movement and dance as a guiding force. What resulted was a syncopated and dissonant tour through feelings of anguish and elation, guided by movement and realised in an improvised piece by Capetonian dancer Skye Weiss. The short film applied the same ideas that characterised the musical process, utilising improvisation and boundaries to structure a coherent and emotionally engaging piece. This was achieved by filmmaker Junaid Rawoot, who translated Skye’s improvisations and Kevin’s music into an audio-visual interaction with light, movement, tension and release. The project manifested as an austere, introspective reflection on the tension between order and chaos, and how movement, light and sound could express this juxtaposition.
