Addressing Personal Safety and Harassment in Ulaanbaatar’s Ger Areas

ADB worked with the ger communities, the Municipality of Ulaanbaatar, and the Public Transport Department to identify personal safety and harassment issues that impact residents in the ger areas as they travelled on roads and in public buses. The project, Improving Transport Services in the Ger Areas used a community-led approach through a series of system-wide interventions to improve personal safety. Crime prevention through environmental design helps reduce opportunities for crime. A community council ensures that villagers remain involved. Customers can safely report their experiences through a new customer feedback mechanism. Bus drivers were trained to address bus safety. The project was supported by the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPR) and the Republic of Korea e-Asia and Knowledge Partnership Fund (EAPKF).
