In this Video you will learn how to answer the Melody Writing question in the AMEB Grade 3 theory exam. There are many solutions to the question, however it is good to learn a basic answer first so that you understand all the essential parts. This will help you structure your answer correctly. You will hear the melody played at the end. It includes a string quartet harmonisation. Essentials * Anacrusis = Dominant harmony (5-1, 7-1, 2-1) * Use the Tonic for the downbeat of the 1st bar. * Move mostly by step with few leaps to add interest. * End the 1st phrase using a note from the dominant triad. * Commence the 2nd phrase with an apex. (Use the 6th or the 8th) * Using mostly steps with a couple of leaps, wind the melody back down towards the final note (tonic). Approach the final note by Step above or below the tonic.
