It was nice of a dear friend to invite me over to his home to celebrate the festival with his family & has also been kind enough to let me shoot in his home! This Indian Festival is celebrated, celebrating the Divine Feminine in the Creation and her nine avatars, each day representing one Avatar. Navaratri or Dussehra is the journey from darkness to light, not the darkness of the night sky but the darkness of one's own ego impulse identities that block one to experience one's true self. The last day is the victorious day when the truth won. This victory is not in reference to a war but it's about becoming aware of oneself & in a way meet the different avatars of the divine goddess as lakshmi, saraswati, durga & so on; in a process when one dissolves oneself. The only way to know you is by distancing. A reverence to know you & your mind and to know you & your body. When this is established, they say the next day is victory! This was a 9days battle between Durga and the Buffalo headed Asura Mahishasura, each day being the destruction of nice ego selfish identities one gets stuck in creating more illusions & not really experiencing the true nature of oneself. The Nine Avatars of Shakthi - 1. Shailputri - Daughter of the Mountains also known as Parvati who had to fullfill her role back as the universal mother to nourish all beings. In her previous life as Goddess Sati & how she gives up her life when her husband Shiva is insulted by her Father, comes to earth in this form to union with Shiva again. 2. Brahmacharini - For one to attain Shiva is not an easy task, it needs work to be put in. Parvathi goes into penance like nobody else ever in this creation for years on to finally marry Shiva. This avatar teaches us penance, devotion, restrain & solitude. 3. Chandraghanta - When Shiva came in all distorted form with ghosts, non human like creatures & beings etc with skulls, snakes & human ash all over his body (not so looking good Shiva) to marry Parvati, she takes up a form to save her family's reputation and also Shiva's reputation. This is a fearful form taken on the day of Shiva-Parvati marriage & the day is know as Mahashivaratri today! 4. Ma Kusmanda - When the universe was only darkness she created the universe with her smile. From the smile, spread light all across the dark universe hence the ultimate source of life. 5. Skandamata - From a combined energy of Shiva-Parvathi a seed is produced which was so hot for anyone to hold, thus she takes up the Avatar of a water form to hold this burning seed which later comes to life (through the spell of tantra) and is know as the Murugan in the South of India also know as Kartikeya thus the Mother of Kartikeyan. 6. Kartiyayani - This form is refered to as Ma Durga. 7. Kaalratri (Death Night) or Kali - The most terrorising form of Durga. The one who brings an end or death to anything that is associated with evil or darkness. 8. Mahagauri - When Parvati went into penance for thousands of years, her body was filled with dirt, worms and all kinds of things. Her skin has turned dark as the night sky and stories go where it's said she took a bath in the Manasarovar as guided by Brahma & the 2nd story goes where Shiva gave her a bath from the Ganga held in his head to clean up all the dirt & Parvathi restores her divine feminine beautiful with her skin turning as white as jasmine flower. Hence the one who emerges as white as a jasmine flower. 9. Siddidatri - Also know as Adi Shakthi. The pure energy form who is formless. The one who appeared from the left side of Shiva. The aspect of the masculine & feminine holding this creation - the ardhanari.
