The term core strengthening work is everywhere. We are told to brace, squeeze and pull in our pelvic floor and abs to be strong. But this is not functional, practical in real life and the body does not operate like this. It’s not great for anyone, but particularly not great for a Hypermobile body. We already spend much of our time unconsciously bracing - our false sense of stability. To further cue more bracing and hold in of abdominal muscles is going to make a recipe for pain. I’ve seen many clients who brace and guard in movement. They have hypertonic pelvic floor muscles and abs that can no longer relax. Many of my initial consultations with clients consist of teaching to unwind all that bound up tension around the pelvic girdle and learning functional breathing when exercising. We learn to move without engaging the core in this artificial way. It leads to a pain-free movement experience. Stop the core!
