Microscopy for

Microscopy for #Beekeepers: Apis mellifera m. Tormentum and Overhair Length. The Norfolk Honey Co. In today's video I continue taking a look at how I can improve my bees by checking out the Tormentum and overhair length of my main breeder colony. I have a sample of 30 bees from my breeder colony and look under the microscope at the tormentum which is the band of hair found across the tergites of the abdomen. This is a really interesting process and one that does take a little time as it is quite finnicky hndling the abdomen of the bees, I found the best way was to actually remove the abdomen from the rest of the bee. Following this I look at the overhair length, again this is relatively easy to perform if you have a feeler gauge of approx. 0.4mm. The conclusion of my checks shows that my bees are actually a mix of races and not "near Native" bees but it does give me something to work from moving forwards. The table use comes from the Dave Cushman website, a fantastic resource for all beekeepers regardless of ability or experience. http://www.dave-cushman.net/ One of the books I mention in my microscopy videos is: Honey Bee Pests, Predators and Diseases by Roger A. I had been struggling to capture images of the processes involved in making up pollen slides as I only had a stereomicroscope and not a trinocular version. After several emails I am delighted to announce that Brunel Microscopes have agreed to supply me with equipment to make the filming process much more professional and clear. I would not enter into an agreement unless I felt it would provide a benefit to the viewer and this is certainly going to make the whole explanation process a lot easier. I have posted links to all the equipment supplied below and if you are thinking of buying a microscope I can recommend Brunel Microscopes having purchased from them previously. Brunel Microscopes are able to ship overseas and with the $ v £ at the moment, now is a great time to buy.
