The Big Ben, the 150-year-old clock tower at a stone’s throw from the British Parliament, is a unique structure. To build a similar structure anywhere on earth, let alone in one of the most congested cities, Kolkata, is a difficult proposition. But that is exactly what a municipality on the north-eastern fringe of the city has done. The South Dum Dum Municipality has raised a Big Ben on the road to the Kolkata airport. The structure which is a replica of London’s BIG BEN will be known as “Kolkata Times Zone” and you can see the imposing structure right at the juncture of Lake Town and the VIP road. Work on this clock tower has been completed in less than 10 months (which is a super fast speed considering how long it has taken the Paroma island flyover at E.M.Bypass to complete). The height of the structure is 135 ft. from street level with around 80 ft. of concrete piling underneath level zero. The entire structure and plan was headed by our own Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s “frequently stated ambition” to turn Kolkata into the “London of the East” surfaced, many in the government and outside are floating ideas to replicate British structures,especially bridges. One of the ideas, which has now lost momentum, was to raise a “London Eye” by the Hooghly, while another was to construct gates partly reminiscent of the ones at Buckingham Palace Garden. A miniature of the Walton Bridge on the Thames is raised on the ditch by the side of “Big Ben”.
